Staying ahead of the game through clinical research is a growing part of my practice. We are able to use the latest treatments for you before they are available. In some cases, we are part of a select group of surgeons around the world applying these new ideas to you. My life’s work reaches its pinnacle when I can apply a new treatment successfully that will help thousands one day.

We are constantly reviewing studies to consider and currently have a select group of clinical trials for which we are enrolling patients. Please contact my research office at 619-456-6012, subscribe to my research newsletter, fill out my confidential contact form below, and review the projects listed here to learn more about all we have going on.

Here are some examples of some recent studies that we have done.   We have number of new studies currently enrolling.  Please contact us to learn more.

SUN Trial

NU Surface Meniscus ImplantThe SUN study is no longer enrolling.

After meniscus surgery, many patients still suffer from persisting knee pain that can seriously affect their daily lives. Non-surgical treatment can be helpful in addressing these symptoms. The meniscus implant has been developed as a new treatment alternative for patients with persistent knee pain following meniscus surgery.

This implant mimics the function of the natural meniscus and is made from medical grade polymers. It has been used in Europe since 2008 and is now undergoing a clinical trial in the U.S.

NeoCart Trial

NeoCartThe NeoCart Clinical Trials is NO LONGER enrolling new patients. If you are a part of the NeoCart Trial, we will follow you for three years after surgery. Please call if you have any questions.

Hymovis Trial

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate if the intra-articular injection of a new viscoelastic Hydrogel (Hymovis) is superior to Placebo (phosphate buffered saline [PBS] in subjects with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee.  This study is completed.

Novartis Trial

novartis-logoThe Novartis Clinical trial.  The goal of this study is to explore the use of a novel approach to cartilage damage and repair.

NovoCart 3D Trial

NOVOCART 3D Autologous Chondrocyte Transplantation System is a biologic-device combination product composed of ex vivo expanded autologous chondrocytes seeded on a bioresorbable biphasic collagen scaffold. Within the United States, this product is investigational and not available or approved for use outside of the clinical trial. In Europe, NOVOCART 3D is an Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product and has been on the market since 2003.

Within the United States, an ongoing Phase 3 clinical study compares NOVOCART 3D, a combination product (biologic/device), to Microfracture in the treatment of articular cartilage defects of the knee. Learn More About This Trial
